How do I move my domain's DNS to PhotonSpark?

Mirror your zone on our nameservers first, then switch nameservers at the registrar. Full propagation takes up to 48 hours; staged correctly, there is no downtime.

The full procedure

  1. Open a DNS migration ticket (or self-serve in the portal). Send us your domain; we can do an AXFR import or you paste the zone file.
  2. We mirror your existing records on our authoritative servers without you switching yet. Verify the records look correct in the portal.
  3. Lower your current TTLs to 300 seconds at your old DNS host. Wait one TTL period.
  4. At your registrar, change the nameservers to ours:
    • ns1.photonspark.net
    • ns2.photonspark.net
    • ns3.photonspark.net
  5. Wait 24–48 hours for global propagation. Both old and new DNS answer correctly during this window if you skipped no step.

What can go wrong

  • DNSSEC at the registrar. You must disable DNSSEC at the registrar before changing nameservers, then re-enable on our side after. Otherwise queries SERVFAIL.
  • Missing email records. Make sure MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC are all present in the new zone before cutover.
  • Subdomain delegations / glue records. If your domain delegates a subzone to another nameserver, we need to know.

How long it takes

The change itself takes seconds. Propagation is up to 48 hours but most resolvers update in 4–6 hours. Use dnschecker.org to monitor.

Reverting

If something goes wrong, change the registrar's nameservers back to the old ones. We do not "take" your domain — your registrar still controls it.
